The Matson Family

Selah, Wash.
Pictured L to R: Jordan, Rod, Jason

The Matsons began farming in 1908 when Sven August Matson planted his first apple orchard in Selah, Washington. Now his great-grandson, Rod, continues the family business along with his two sons, Jason and Jordan. Much of the orchard activities are managed by Jason while Jordan oversees the packing and shipping operations.

Where do you see yourself if you were not farming?

  • Rod: Starting from about age 12, there was never any question what I would doing. I worked with my father every day after school, every weekend, and all school vacations and breaks. I have and will always enjoy this type of work.
  •
  • Jason: Perhaps if it weren’t for farming, I might be a lion tamer. I guess we will never know.
  •
  • Jordan: When you grow up working on your family’s farm, you don’t really think about another line of work. But I enjoy building things so probably construction management or IT (building programs).

Off-the-farm hobbies or interests:

  • Rod: There’s not a lot of free time in the life of a farmer, but I do enjoy woodworking and wine/whiskey tasting (though not simultaneously!).
  •
  • Jason: College football (WSU), British comedy such as Monty Python, and I also sit on the Board of Directors for the Yakima Symphony Orchestra.
  •
  • Jordan: Computers, guns, and family- generally exclusive of each other. I enjoy supporting our community and am on the Board of Directors for the Capitol Theatre.

Fondest Farm Moment:

  • Rod: Any time we plant a new orchard.
  •
  • Jason: My nephew, Ben, and I enjoy gorging on cherries fresh off the tree.
  •
  • Jordan: Frost control as a kid was always a fun adventure (the innocence of youth!). I would wake up in the wee hours of the morning, ride around with my dad or uncle in a pickup truck, start wind machines, drink hot cocoa, and eat any bit of junk food I wanted.
